How safe is canyoning?

Topics
This is how it looks in practice:
- Guided tours: A trained guide leads the group. Knows the canyon, checks water level and weather, decides what is possible.
- Equipment: Helmet, harness, rope, neoprene – all checked and up to date. No one starts without helmet.
- Pre-tour briefing: Learn how to jump, slide, abseil, move in water. Clear and understandable.
- Safety standards: Many providers follow standards like ISO 21101 – regular training, control systems, clear procedures.
- Weather monitoring: Rising water or approaching thunderstorms cancel tour. Sometimes tours do not start.
Participants must take surroundings seriously, listen to guide, assess themselves. Canyoning is safe – not risk-free, but manageable.
Most accidents come from overconfidence or recklessness. Following rules gives best chance for intense, safe experience.
