What equipment is needed for a via ferrata?

Updated last week

The core of the equipment is a modern Y-shaped via ferrata set. Two carabiners, a webbing fall arrester - and you are ready. Attach set to harness with a loop. Catches a fall, absorbs force. Improvised solutions like simple slings have no place as they cannot withstand load which is life-threatening in case of a fall.

Harness: fits, holds, secures.
A suitable climbing harness connects you to the via ferrata set. Usually a waist harness is sufficient. For children or high center-of-gravity users, add chest or full harness. Correct adjustment is essential, otherwise useless in an emergency.

Helmet: mandatory.
Rockfall is real. Especially in busy areas, debris can fall anytime. Head contact with rock possible. Helmet provides reliable protection and is always required.

Gloves: comfort and protection.
Via ferrata gloves optional but recommended. Improve grip on cable, prevent abrasions, protect from wire splinters. Especially on long tours, difference noticeable.

Shoes: stability essential
Sturdy mountaineering or approach shoes required. Non-slip sole, solid tread, ankle support. This ensures safety on wet or loose footholds. Climbing shoes are specialized, mostly for experienced climbers on short, extreme sections.

Lanyard: rest without stress
Short webbing with carabiner attached to harness allows clipping in to rest. Valuable on long or demanding routes when arms fatigue.

Backpack: light, practical
Small backpack recommended. You should carry:

  • Water.
  • Food.
  • Weatherproof clothing (e.g., rain jacket, warm layers).
