The Sledding Basics

Our 10 tips for safe sledding

Sledding – Everyone Can Do It, Right?
Yes, generally – but knowing a few rules and the right sledding technique can significantly increase both your fun and safety on the slopes.

As an event provider based near the most beautiful sledding trails of the Bernese Alps, we spend a lot of time sledding. Sledding is a popular sport and can be enjoyed almost anywhere with enough snow. That’s why most of our guests already have some sledding experience – or quickly learn the basics with our on-site guidance.

We’d like to share our sledding expertise with you here, because we’ve seen time and again that brushing up on your sledding knowledge really pays off.

– The Outdoor Event Team

  1. Sit properly on your sled. All other positions increase your risk of tipping over and make it harder to steer.
  2. Always hold the sled by the rope. If you fall off and let go, your sled may continue down the hill alone, and you’ll have to chase it—or worse, search for it on foot.
  3. To brake, press both feet flat into the snow. On icy or steep terrain, use a brake aid, such as a slip-on sole with flat spikes.
  4. For an emergency stop, lift the entire sled. This causes the ends of the runners to dig into the snow and slows the sled more effectively.
  5. Modern sport sleds can be steered better with weight shifting than traditional wooden sleds, even on steep and icy tracks.
Note: They’re faster due to improved gliding but easier to control.
  6. If you want to take a break, step off to the side of the sledding track to give others space to pass.
  7. Always keep enough distance from others so you can brake in time without endangering yourself or anyone else.
  8. Follow the marked sledding path and avoid cutting corners for everyone’s safety.
  9. Adjust your speed to match your skill and the conditions. Sledding is fun—as long as you reach the bottom safely.
🚫 Racing against others on public sledding runs is not a good idea. Just like driving on roads, races require special safety precautions.
  10. Avoid drinking alcohol before sledding. Save the socializing—which is a great part of any sledding adventure—for after your run.
