Can a rafting boat capsize or tip over?

Updated last week
Topics

A rafting boat is not a cruise ship. It reacts to waves, current, and your paddling. In strong whitewater or with poor maneuvers, a boat can theoretically tip. Happens, but rarely. Guides know every spot, every wave, every line. Navigate to prevent tipping.

What if you end up in the water?
Stay calm. You are wearing a life jacket and helmet. The life jacket keeps you afloat and helmet protects your head. There is also a safety rope on the outside of the boat to hold onto. The guide usually helps you back in. If not, safety kayak intervenes. There is a safety kayak on any high risk rivers that accompanies every tour, stays close and responds instantly.

Practice safety before start
Guide shows before boarding:

  • How to behave correctly in water
  • How to float safely (on back, feet downstream)
  • How to get back into boat or wait for help

Capsizing is part of the experience, not panic.

A raft can tip. There is no need to panic. With equipment, guidance, strong team, you get safely back on board.
