A travel story by Annemarie Rüeber
Day 1: Starting at Jungfraujoch – Snowshoeing Through Eternal Ice
A deep blue sky welcomed us at Jungfraujoch as we stepped off the train. Before us stretched a pristine snow-covered landscape sparkling in the sunlight. After weeks of anticipation and careful preparation, I could hardly believe it: our snowshoe adventure into the Jungfrau-Aletsch UNESCO World Heritage Site was finally beginning!
Before setting off, we double-checked our gear:
- Snowshoes with solid grip for steeper terrain
- Warm, layered technical clothing
- Safety equipment – including avalanche beacon, probe, and shovel. This standard gear is essential in high alpine terrain.
After a brief acclimatization, we met our mountain guide and the rest of the group. Then we set off – downhill toward the Konkordia Hut. The scenery was breathtaking: sheer rock faces soared skyward on both sides, and the vast Aletsch Glacier stretched out before us.
We wrapped up the evening in a relaxed atmosphere – with a glass of Prosecco on the hut’s terrace and a spectacular view of the snow-covered peaks.
Day 2: To the Hollandia Hut – Pure Glacier Panorama
After a breezy descent down the Konkordia stairs, the route continued toward the Hollandia Hut (3,238 m). We were surrounded by an alpine landscape unlike any other: endless glaciers, rugged rock formations, and a silence broken only by the crunch of our snowshoes in the snow.
The weather was perfect, and with every step, we ventured deeper into this high-alpine winter wonderland.
Day 3: Summit on Äbeni Flue (3,962 m)
The next morning began with icy temperatures – but also with brilliant sunshine. Our goal: the 3,962-meter summit of the Äbeni Flue. The ascent was demanding, but every bit of effort was rewarded with breathtaking views.
From the top, we were treated to a panorama like no other: Jungfrau, Aletschhorn, Finsteraarhorn, and in the distance, the Monte Rosa massif – a backdrop so majestic it left us momentarily speechless.
Day 4: Descent into the Lötschental – A Finale Full of Impressions
The final day of our tour led us into the Lötschental. During the descent, we took in the beauty of this unique mountain landscape one last time before finally reaching Fafleralp – tired, but deeply content.
This guided snowshoe tour in the Bernese Oberland was more than just a winter adventure – it reminded me how precious and worthy of protection this magnificent natural world truly is.
