Team Ski Tour Lötschenlücke, May 2023
125 Years of the Grindelwald Mountain Guide Association

After an uncertain weather forecast, we were rewarded for our courage today! At 7:10 AM, we met at the Grindelwald Terminal. We, part of the Winter Team from Outdoor, were a mixed group of employees from the shop, ski rental, Bodmi lift, piste preparation, ski school sales, and of course, our mountain guide Hansueli and the anniversary ice axe. We took the Eiger Express and the Jungfrau Railway up to the Jungfraujoch. Hansueli gave the first instructions, and we geared up for the glacier ski tour. We left the Jungfraujoch at a brisk pace to immerse ourselves in the magnificent glacier landscape. Expectations for snow quality were not high – but wow, we were pleasantly surprised. Initially cautious with the first turns, we soon picked up speed – we practically flew over the Jungfrau firn down to the Konkordiaplatz. By the way, the anniversary ice axe tried flying too, and it worked out quite well 😊
Upon reaching the Konkordiaplatz, we switched to skins and leisurely hiked towards the Lötschenlücke. Since we were making good time, Hansueli took us on a detour into the crevasse landscape above the Hollandia Hut. The anniversary ice axe was quite taken with all the ice and deep glacier crevasses. We navigated our way through the labyrinth – or rather, Hansueli led us back to safe ground. On a glacier surface at about 3300 meters above sea level, we switched back to descent mode. We skied down to the Lötschenlücke and from there continued over the Lang Glacier. The snow was great until we reached lower areas where the rain had turned it into slush. Shortly after 1 PM, we arrived at the Fafleralp. We took a shuttle bus to Blatten, where we treated ourselves to some food. In the afternoon, we made our way home via Goppenstein, Spiez, and Interlaken back to Grindelwald.
It was an impressive tour for all of us with a super cool team!
