Ropes Park with Kids: Which Course from Which Age?
Your kid is standing at the first course and wants to go immediately. You're standing next to them thinking: is that high enough to worry about? The answer is usually: for you yes, for your kid no.
Ropes parks are one of the few places where children are faster than adults. Not because the courses are easy, but because kids think less and do more. The suspension bridge wobbles? Across. The net is crooked? Through. The beam is narrow? No problem when you weigh 25 kilos.
OUTDOOR runs two outdoor ropes parks (Interlaken and Rigi) and one indoor ropes park in Grindelwald. All three are designed for families, but they work differently. Which park fits which age depends on your child's height, not their birthday.
When Can My Child Start Climbing?
Access restrictions in the ropes parks are based on body height, not age. That makes sense, because a tall five-year-old reaches more than a small seven-year-old: the grips need to fit, the safety systems need to sit properly on the body.
Ropes Park Interlaken has the lowest entry point:
- Snowli Kids Course (from age 2): A ground-level area with child-friendly obstacles. No safety system needed, the elements are low enough for an adult to reach in at any time. Ideal as a first touch with climbing.
- From 110 cm: 3 courses open. Requirement: 1:1 supervision by an adult. That means one adult per child on the course, not one for three.
- From 120 cm: 6 courses. Still requires adult accompaniment under 16, but more choice.
- From 140 cm: All 14 courses, including the high ones with platforms up to 23 metres.
Ropes Park Rigi starts a bit higher:
- From 120 cm: 3 courses with 1:1 adult supervision.
- From 135 cm: All 9 routes open.
- No Snowli course. For families with very small children, Interlaken is the better choice.
Indoor Ropes Park Grindelwald:
- From 120 cm: 3 courses.
- From 140 cm: All 5 courses.
- Adult supervision required under 12 (not under 16 as in the outdoor parks).
All parks require: children under 16 (Interlaken/Rigi) or under 12 (Grindelwald) need an adult companion. Under 18, written consent from a parent or guardian is required.
What Surprises Parents
Most parents expect to motivate their child. In practice, it's the other way around. After the ground-level test course where the guides explain the safety system, kids want to keep going immediately. The briefing takes 15 minutes, that's the longest wait of the day.
What parents should know:
The courses are self-directed. Your child chooses which course to take. If the medium one is too much, they go back to the easy one. No pressure, no time limit.
The safety system stays connected throughout. In both outdoor parks, your child can't accidentally unclip. That reduces the risk to what climbing simply is: focus, balance, a bit of courage.
You climb along or watch from below. On courses with 1:1 supervision, you're in a harness yourself. On the others, you can stand below and watch, or head to your own course. The barbecue area in Interlaken and the picnic area at Rigi are perfect for spectators who prefer to stay on the ground.
