Overview

Recommended for: Anyone who trades comfort for the view.

A true insider tip! The lesser-known Lauterbrunner Breithorn offers beautiful climbing on the west ridge.

The Lauterbrunner Breithorn is unfairly overshadowed by the big four-thousanders, as it also has much to offer at 3,780 m above sea level. The climbing on the west ridge is just as impressive as its larger neighbors. The combination with an overnight stay at the new Mutthornhütte makes the tour truly unique.

Itinerary

Meeting points
Day1
Day 1: Ascent to Mutthornhütte 2,901 m above sea level
After an exciting bus ride into the Gasterntal, we hike along the Kander further into the valley. Soon, the trail becomes steeper until we reach the edge of the Kanderfirn. Our path leads us over this flat ice giant to the Mutthornhütte, which is situated on a rock island in the middle of the Kanderfirn. With a cool drink on the hut terrace, we study our goal for the next day.

Day 2: Summit tour to Breithorn 3,780 m above sea level
Early in the morning, we leisurely ascend over the glacier towards Petersgrat. Then, we descend slightly over the Üssere and Innere Talgletscher and climb back up to the Wetterlücke. From here, the climb over the west ridge begins. We ascend the Lauterbrunner Breithorn 3,780 m above sea level over the heavily structured gneiss – a solitary peak with fantastic panoramic and deep views. After a summit break, we descend over the west ridge back to the Wetterlücke. Our descent into the Lötschental begins – it's a steep way down. Once in the valley, we begin our journey home in the afternoon.

General weather info

Weather can influence any tour, and a clear decision is often only possible on the day itself. We review conditions carefully and remain within our safety limits, and bad weather alone does not mean we have to stop.

Make sure we can reach you with current contact information in case your booking changes. Silence from us means your tour is still planned or the final call is not yet made. If we need to cancel, you can rebook, choose another activity, or get a full refund.
