Overview

Recommended for: Anyone who trades comfort for the view.

A challenging four-thousander that demands respect: rock, snow, and endless views.

The Schreckhorn is not only the northernmost but also the most challenging four-thousander in Switzerland. Its name is well-deserved. The approach to the remote Schreckhorn Hut and a long, varied climbing route make this tour an intense experience. Anyone who reaches this summit has earned every single meter.

Itinerary

Meeting points
Day1
Day 1: Ascent to Schreckhorn Hut
Starting from the Pfingstegg cable car station, the journey begins gently. A first highlight is the Bäregg mountain house with its terrace offering a wide view of the Fiescherwand. From here, it becomes more alpine: the narrow path leads through the wild landscape of the lower Grindelwald Glacier. A short section with iron steps and ladders takes us over a rock step before the hut comes into view. The Schreckhorn Hut is located at 2,530 m a.s.l. and is the perfect starting point for the summit ascent.

Day 2: Ascent of the Schreckhorn
The day begins early, usually at 3 a.m. Headlamps light the way to the "Gaag", an initial climb before reaching the Schreckfirn Glacier. The bergschrund marks the start of the climbing. The route follows steep rock steps and snowfields. After the first two ascents, we reach the breakfast spot. The next rope lengths require concentration and technique. The reward: the summit of the Schreckhorn at 4,078 m a.s.l. The view extends to Mont Blanc. The long descent follows the same route back to the hut, where we recover from the tour.

General weather info

Weather can influence any tour, and a clear decision is often only possible on the day itself. We review conditions carefully and remain within our safety limits, and bad weather alone does not mean we have to stop.

Make sure we can reach you with current contact information in case your booking changes. Silence from us means your tour is still planned or the final call is not yet made. If we need to cancel, you can rebook, choose another activity, or get a full refund.
