Climate Change – A Changing Landscape

Temperature

It’s summer – the thermometer reads 30°C. Not exactly the kind of scene you’d expect in Grindelwald, the glacier village in the Bernese Oberland. But climate change has left its mark, and the mountains tell their own quiet story.

Scientific studies confirm that global average temperatures have risen in recent decades. This rise is having profound effects on ecosystems worldwide, and mountain regions are especially vulnerable. In fact, temperatures in these areas are increasing faster than the global average.

Melting Ice and Snow

The Eiger, once partially cloaked in snow and ice, now reveals more of its dark rock face. The Fiescherhörner, once a glacial paradise, are losing ice year after year. And this isn’t just a local issue. From the Alps to the Himalayas, glaciers are melting at an unprecedented pace.

The consequences are far-reaching: increased meltwater can lead to flooding, and once the ice is gone, water scarcity may follow in regions that rely on glacial runoff. The Alps, with their vast ice reserves, have long been considered the “water tower” of Europe.

The future

But as with any change, there is also adaptation.
Where the ice retreats, life begins to take hold. Glacier moraines are transforming into living landscapes. Vegetation spreads, the tree line climbs higher, once barren slopes now show a soft green fuzz, and new ecosystems begin to form.

As beautiful as these emerging green oases may be, they cannot replace the glaciers that have been lost—or the critical role they played for the climate and surrounding ecosystems.

That’s why it’s so important to tell the stories of these mountains and their changing landscapes—and to experience the traces of the past within nature itself. Not just as a memory of what once was, but also as a possible glimpse into what the future may hold.
